Electronystagmography (ENG)

Electronystagmography or (ENG) is a group of tests that record eye movements from electrical signals in an effort to enable a physician to better diagnose dizziness.

During this test a patient has electrodes affixed to the face and forehead, which will serve as a means of monitoring. The patient will be asked to look at an LCD screen which will flash, sit in different positions and hot and cold air will be blown into each ear.

Please follow the instructions below for this test:

  1. No alcoholic beverages for two days (48 hours) prior to your testing.

  2. No food or drink for 4 hours prior to your testing.

  3. No eye or facial make-up on the day of the testing.

  4. The following medications, taken within 48 hours prior to testing may affect the test results, or prevent completion of the testing. Please avoid unless absolutely necessary the following medications:

    • Sleeping medications
    (Tranquilizers)
    • Anti-depressants
    (Barbiturates)
    • Pain medications (may take Tylenol or Advil)
     
    • Cold medications
    (Antihistamines)
    • Anti-dizzy medications (Antivert, Meclizine, Bonine, etc.)
    • Anti-nausea medications (Compazine, Phenergan, etc.)
    • Dilantin (You may take the day prior to testing. DO NOT take the day of testing. Bring medication with you to your appointment)
  1. You may continue to take life sustaining medications such as blood pressure, cardiac, Diabetes, and thyroid medications.

  2. Please wear comfortable clothing (i.e., pants instead of a skirt or dress) on the day of testing.

  3. Do not wear contact lenses; if you wear glasses, bring them with you.

  4. Please allow 70 minutes for the test.
